Exploring the Slavic Palate with a Constructivist Palette
Shchi & Kasha is a lovingly crafted cookbook featuring Slavic family recipes that I hold near and dear to my heart. Drawing inspiration from Russian constructivism, I aimed to produce a result that was stylistically familiar yet modernized and expanded upon. The front matter pages feature cutouts that meld seamlessly into the composition, imbuing a sense of curiosity, surprise, and delight with each turn of a page–all senses I feel when enjoying a Russian dish for the first time that’s been home-cooked by my grandmother.
Thumbing Through the Past
In my design research for this project, I drew inspiration most heavily from the Realist Manifesto, a key historical document which outlines several core principles essential to constructivism. I also referenced the work of Russian constructivist bigwigs such as El Lissitsky, Alexander Rodchenko, and Kazimir Malevich. I wanted to create a layout that felt fresh and exciting, while maintaining visual consistency throughout the book.
